Star Search had been disappointing for everyone. By the time the group arrived back in Houston, Mathew had taken the time to do some thinking.

“Some incredible things have happened over the past few years,” he said to Tina. “But the girls still need a record deal.”

Tina agreed. Bey and her friends had so much talent. It was frustrating that things weren’t moving more quickly.

“What can we do?” she asked. “Andretta is doing her best.”

“I want to manage the group full-time,” Mathew told her. “I’ll take a course in show business management, learn the ropes.”

Tina gulped. “You mean you would leave your job?”

Mathew nodded. “Things may be difficult for a while, but this is the right thing to do.” He reminded her of how poor his own family had been. He had grown up with nothing. “But I’ve never let it hold me back,” he said. “I worked and worked until I succeeded. Now my daughter has a dream and I want to help her make it come true.”

Tina was nervous. Only the income from her hair salon to support the family? Mathew’s job was very well paid. They lived in a large house and had two cars. Their daughters had grown up without having to worry about money...

But Tina had also grown up with very little. She had built up her salon from nothing, and now it was a thriving business. She was as determined as Mathew to succeed. Maybe everything would be OK, after all.

She nodded. “Bey wants to be a singer more than anything in the world. If we can help her, we should.”
